  Dear Reader,

With the Presidency of G20 in 2023, India seeks to play an important role in finding pragmatic global solutions for the wellbeing of all, manifesting the true spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or the ‘World is One Family’. The theme also spotlights LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) with its associated, environmentally sustainable and responsible choices leading to global transformative actions resulting in a cleaner and greener future. Four meetings of the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) are scheduled, to be led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) for discussions focusing on the agenda ‘Promotion of Blue Economy along with Coastal Sustainability’, ‘Restoration of Degraded Lands and Ecosystems’ and ‘Enhancement of Biodiversity’, and ‘Strengthening of Circular Economy’.

The first ECSWG meeting concluded in Bengaluru (9th-11th Feb) with the G20 countries focused on environment and climate action aiming to address interconnected issues of climate change and biodiversity loss and to pursue sustainable growth. The second ECSWG meeting in Gandhinagar (27th-29th March) mainly focused on sharing best water resource management practices; a technical session on circular economy; engaging discussions to outline ways of effectively accelerating the transition to a sustainable and climate resilient Blue Economy; and a session on biodiversity for accelerating the action on implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework across the G20 countries.

Alongside these efforts, to mark the occasion of International Day of Forests (celebrated every year on 21st March), our project ‘Sustainable management of forest ecosystem services’ organised a week-long campaign to celebrate ‘Health & Forests’ with a series of events including a tree walk, a painting competition, and a quiz among others.

In this issue of our newsletter, we are featuring an article on integrating forest ecosystem services approach in working plan of Himachal Pradesh and a short film on Amrit Dharohar screened at the ‘75 at 75’ side event at the Ramsar CoP14. We thank you for your continued support and value any feedback that may help us improve our further engagement with you!

Towards a greener future!

Warmly,
Editors

Integrating Forest Ecosystem Services Approach in Working Plans for Himachal Pradesh
The National Working Plan Code 2014 emphasises the sustainable management of forests for maintaining and enhancing supply of Forest Ecosystem Services (FES) for the benefit of local people, hence the importance of integrating the FES approach in the working plans. A Working Plan has been the main instrument of forest planning (more exactly forest working) in India for scientific management of forests.
On similar lines, the Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystem Services (FES) Project is working towards integrating the FES Approach in the Working Plans of two Forest Divisions (namely Rohru and Dharamshala) of Himachal Pradesh. This is being executed in cooperation with the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department (HPFD) and supported by an agency called the Integrated Geo-informatic solution (IGIS) Pvt. Ltd., Dehradun.

In order to facilitate effective implementation of these sustainable practices, a standard agroforestry policy that provides an enabling environment is needed. With that in mind, India focused on evidence-based policy development based on extensive interdisciplinary research, e.g., on the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) and the results of the collaboration of the World Agroforestry Centre with other national institutions. This resulted in a well-founded National Agroforestry Policy (2014), that was supported by the Sub-Mission on Agroforestry (2016), and the National Mission on Bamboo (2018), that support the adoption and expansion of agroforestry.

Our Amrit Dharohar - Cultural Significance of Indian Wetlands
Wetlands are the Amrit Dharohar of the country. As the world faces unprecedented changes in climatic conditions and growing demands for resources, we must take lessons from our rich history, traditional values and cultural heritage to continue our co-existence with wetlands and the rich biodiversity they support. This short film, screened at the ‘75 at 75’ side event at the Ramsar CoP14 takes a quick peek at the significance of Indian wetlands with respect to local art, architecture, music, cuisine, craftwork and livelihoods documented through inscriptions, customs and rituals.
