  Dear Reader,

In a few months countries worldwide will get together at Kunming, China for the fifteenth meeting of the conference of parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity and consider the first draft of the Global Biodiversity Framework that was released on 12 July. The first draft urges for "an integrated approach to guarantee that action is taken to employ the essential tools needed to reverse biodiversity loss and its impact on ecosystems, species and people and that efforts are galvanised at all levels to build a better future in harmony with nature."

On the same lines, in the fourteenth issue of this newsletter, we talk about partnerships for biodiversity based on the recommendations of this framework. We’ve also included some interesting films on sustainable ecotourism in the Himalayas and best practice manuals on raising nurseries and conducting consultations with local bodies towards biodiversity management. We thank you for your support and welcome your valuable feedback towards further improving our engagement with you.

Stay safe and healthy.

Warmly,
Editors

The Future of Partnerships for Biodiversity
The first draft of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
On 12 July, in a virtual press conference, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat released the official first draft of a new Global Biodiversity Framework. This framework aims to guide actions worldwide through 2030 to preserve and protect nature and its essential services to people. It proposes 21 targets and 10 ‘milestones’ for 2030, en route to ‘living in harmony with nature’ by 2050, a vision adopted by 196 member parties of the CBD in 2010.

“Urgent policy action globally, regionally and nationally is required to transform economic, social and financial models so that the trends that have exacerbated biodiversity loss will stabilise by 2030 and allow for the recovery of natural ecosystems in the following 20 years, with net improvements by 2050”, said CBD Executive Secretary Elizabeth Maruma Mrema during the press conference. The framework operates on the theory of change which assumes that transformative actions are taken to..

Nursery Training Manual

Socio-economic surveys with local communities in Himachal Pradesh indicated that water supply is the most crucial ecosystem service. This manual covers the important step of nursery establishment to produce robust tree saplings to maximise good forest cover. Well-established vegetation intercepts and retains precipitation and enhances the water storage capacity of the soil below.
