Dear Readers,

Welcome to the 24th edition of our newsletter. We are delighted to bring the latest programme updates and insights for biodiversity enthusiasts.

Springs are critical source of freshwater for remote communities as well as for sustaining biodiversity and ecosystems in the Himalayas. This edition features an appraisal of springshed management structure in Uttarakhand. The appraisal recommends a four-tier institutional structure for promoting inclusive and sustainable management of springsheds across the Indian Himalayan Region.

The G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration in September 2023 committed to promoting the One Health-based approach driven by the Quadripartite’s One Health Joint Plan of Action (2022-2026). Our featured article explores how 'One Health' approach can contribute to a healthier planet.

Additionally, we share our experience participating in BioFach 2023, a renowned trade fair dedicated to strengthening the Indian organic movement and promoting sustainable farming. We have insights from eco-guide events on wetland management, news from training programs and workshops focusing on the sustainable production of celery, cumin and dill seeds. Furthermore, there are updates on state-level stakeholder consultations on incentive-based mechanisms and payment for ecosystem service policies, as well as our efforts to enhance forest sustainability using 3D models for awareness and conservation in Himachal Pradesh.

In the spirit of the season, let us celebrate our festivals with a heightened environmental consciousness, ensuring a sustainable and biodiverse future for our planet.

Your continued support is highly valued, and we welcome your feedback as we strive to enhance our engagement.

Towards a Greener Future!

Warmly,
Editors

One Health: A Sustainable Solution for a Healthier Planet
What is One Health?
Imagine our world as a vast jigsaw puzzle, with people, animals, plants, and their shared environment – every piece matters. One Health acts as the glue ensuring these pieces fit seamlessly while interacting with one another on a daily basis. While it may sound complex at first, it has many connections with our everyday life, given that the approach aims to improve our health and well-being, as well as that of other living creatures and their shared environment.

One Health is an integrated approach aiming to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. It recognises the interdependence of human, animal, plant, and environmental health.

Appraisal of Springshed Management Structure for Springs in Uttarakhand:
Recommendations for Desirable Change
A recent study critically analyses the institutional structure and the role of various departments and associated stakeholders for the Springshed Management Consortium (SMC). The study was instrumental in the formulation of a four-tier structure of the SMC to be established, from State Government level at the apex for the policy decisions, to the Gram Panchayat level bodies for implementation and sustainable management of springs and springsheds. This report outlines a series of recommendations aimed at establishing an institutional framework that promotes inclusive springshed management which can be upscaled in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). These recommendations focus on anchoring relevant stakeholders to ensure effective management of springs, considering the unique characteristics and challenges of the region.
