Indo-German bilateral cooperation is well integrated in the foreign policy framework of relations between India and Germany. Both countries (India & Germany) are equally committed to achieving the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). India is viewed by Germany, as one of the main partners that has a key role to play in solving the global development issues.
GIZ supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. Indo-German Biodiversity Programme operates on behalf of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is, in general, GIZ’s main commissioning party. The Ministry commissions GIZ to implement advisory projects that enhance the capacities of individuals, organisations and societies to improve their living conditions through efficient and sustainable use of resources.
The BMZ develops the guidelines and the fundamental concepts on which German development policy is based. It devises long-term strategies for cooperation with the various players concerned and defines the rules for implementing that cooperation. These are the foundations for developing shared projects with partner countries and international development organisations. All efforts are informed by the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals, which aims to halve poverty in the world by 2015. For more information on BMZ, please visit www.bmz.de
The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) works closely with GIZ and commissions the company to implement various bilateral and regional programmes and projects, mainly within the scope of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). For more information on BMU please visit www.bmuv.de
Since 2008, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has been financing projects as a part of Germany’s climate financing and funding commitments. These efforts provide various co-benefits, particularly the improvement of living conditions in partner countries.
The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is an important part of the German government's international climate finance commitment. Since 2022 the IKI is implemented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) in close cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).
