Virtual review workshops on wetland assessments: Pong Reservoir

As a step towards development of integrated management plans for the project Ramsar sites, online workshop and stakeholder consultation were organised to understand and review the present status and discuss the future course of action for the ongoing wetland assessments.

Virtual stakeholder meeting on modelling climate and hydrological risks associated with ecosystem functioning of Pong Reservoir, Himachal Pradesh, being carried out by Integrated Natural Resources Management Consultants Pvt. Ltd. (INRM), was held on July 2, 2020. INRM presented preliminary results as well as expected outputs of the climate and hydrological risk model. The meeting helped in understanding the information needs of stakeholders for wetland management so as to align and focus the outputs of the model to provide useful insights and information to stakeholders. PCCF (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, Himachal Pradesh Forest Dept., Himachal Pradesh State Wetland Authority, Site manager – DFO (WL) Hamirpur, Bhakra Beas Management Board, Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, WISA and the GIZ project team participated in the meeting. The meeting highlighted that the modelling results should be able to identify changes and drivers of change in the Pong wetland system and subsequently aid the formulation of management strategies.

About the project

The Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project aims to strengthen the institutional framework and capacities for an ecosystem-based integrated management of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar sites) in India. Four Ramsar sites have been selected as pilot sites under the project: Pong Dam and Renuka Lake in Himachal Pradesh, Bhitarkanika Mangroves in Odisha, and the Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. The project is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). This project is part of the International Climate Initiative(IKI). BMU supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag. Read More
