International Day for Biological Diversity 2017 celebration at Maharashtra

On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity (IDBD), a workshop was organised at Nagpur, Maharashtra by Maharashtra State Biodiversity Diversity Board (MSBB). The theme for this year was ‘Biodiversity & Sustainable Tourism’, thus the event witnessed huge participation from Maharashtra State Forest Department & Tourism Department. Main attraction of workshop were the participants from BMCs & NGOs working on biodiversity subject. Representative of around 50 BMCs across the state of Maharashtra participated in this workshop. Various talks were organised focusing majorly on two topics i.e. Biodiversity Conservation & Eco tourism. Roles of local communities/BMCs/JFMCs were thoroughly discussed during these interactions.

Dr V K Sinha, Member Secretary, MSBB, in his welcome note, thanked GIZ for initiating ABS Partnership Project in Maharashtra and for supporting few BMCs & resource organisations for participating in this workshop. Honourable Shri Vikas Kharge, Principal Secretary (Revenue & Forest) explicitly spoke about need for strengthening of BMCs through continuous hand holding support & importance of development of PBR, as a ground for successful implementation of BD Act. Honourable Justice Shri Sunil Shukre, also expressed necessity for having a robust approach by MSBB towards implementation of BD Act.

Exhibition was also arranged at the venue by various line departments of Forest. MSBB has invited ABS Partnership Project for demonstrating the project work in Maharashtra. In order to disseminate this information a banner highlighting the districts, bio resources coming under the scope of project and supply chains of few bio-resources along with their commercial uses, was prepared.

The workshop successfully directed towards need for development of a community centric approach for conservation of biodiversity.
