Learning from Nature: Business Cases from India

This film was made under the GIZ project titled “Incentives for Sustainable Management of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (ISBM)” of the Indo-German Biodiversity Programme. The ISBM project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and  is implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.”

India Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI): IBBI serves as a national platform for businesses for dialogue sharing and learning, ultimately leading them to mainstream sustainable management of biodiversity into business operations. In May 2014, IBBI was launched under the ISBM project. The initiative is hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and aims to lead the Indian businesses to:

 -   Understand the linkage and impacts of business operations on biodiversity.

 -   Identify and partner with relevant stakeholders to create synergies in biodiversity .conservation.

 -   Document and adopt replicable local and global best practices.

The commitment of 26 signatory companies has granted IBBI a global recognition with India, and presently takes charge as a member of the Executive Committee of Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity (GBPP), which is hosted by the Secretariat of UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Chaired by Mr. R. Mukundan, Managing Director, Tata Chemicals, IBBI last year launched two regional chapters- Western regional Chapter at Godrej, Mumbai, and Southern Regional Chapter at Wipro, in Bengaluru to increase the regional outreach.  IBBI, at present, offers customised training programmes on managing natural capital. IBBI is working with six pilot forerunner companies (Ambuja Cements, Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co., Hindustan Zinc, JSW Steel, Mahindra Lifespace Developers and Tata Chemicals). The training program consists of a step by step approach involving Quick scan, Baseline Assessment, Natural Capital Profile (NCP) and finally Natural Capital Action Plan (NCAP).
