Dr Sujata Arora, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, New Delhi participated in the side-event, ‘Capacity Development for the Implementation of Nagoya Protocol – Achievements and Challenges’ on 10 July 2018 organised by the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Capacity Development Initiative, GIZ, Germany. The event was part of the second meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-2) which took place from 9-13 July 2018 in Montreal, Canada. The SBI was established by the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to review, enhance and discuss the operations of the convention and its protocols and to strengthen its implementation.

The side-event focused on the achievements and challenges in supporting the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol at the national level. The progress of ABS implementation in India was described focusing on the development of a communication strategy and use of communication tools to enhance awareness for ABS in India.
Implementation challenges were discussed based on the outcome of the ‘Third ABS Dialogue on Key Challenges and Practical Ways Forward for the Full Implementation of the Nagoya Protocol and its Contribution to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda’ which was held in May 2018 in Mexico City, Mexico.
