Web Portal on Wetlands of India

02 Feb, 2021

On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) announced that the development of a web portal on wetlands has been initiated. The portal is being developed under a Technical Cooperation project “Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection” (Wetlands Project) of MoEF&CC in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

The web portal would be a publicly available platform for knowledge sharing, information dissemination, hosting capacity building material, and providing a single-point access data repository. It would be a system for processing information and making it available to the stakeholders in an efficient and accessible manner.

The portal would help fulfil the statutory requirements of maintaining a centralised web portal and will provide a Management Information System (MIS) login for each and every state/UT wherein information pertaining to the wetlands in their administration needs to be uploaded. This information would be linked the public front of the portal and will be available for the public with varying access rights.

About the project

The Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project aims to strengthen the institutional framework and capacities for an ecosystem-based integrated management of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar sites) in India. Four Ramsar sites have been selected as pilot sites under the project: Pong Dam and Renuka Lake in Himachal Pradesh, Bhitarkanika Mangroves in Odisha, and the Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. The project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in close cooperation with the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA). This project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
