Training on Wetlands of India Portal MIS for State Wetland Authorities

A training was conducted for the State Wetland Authorities of the project pilot states on the Management Information System (MIS) of the Wetlands of India Portal.

The portal was launched on 2 October 2021, on Gandhi Jayanti by the Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). It is a single-point access to all information relating to wetlands in India with a Management Information System (MIS) that serves as a platform to share digital inventories of the wetlands, upload brief documents, and a Content Management System (CMS) that enables sharing and exchanging good practices related to wetlands management.

On 20 December 2021, a training was conducted with MoEF&CC and National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) for the Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority (TNSWA), Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology & Environment (HIMCOSTE), Chilika Development Authority (CDA) and NCSCM. It aimed at familiarising the SWAs with their unique MIS dashboards, adding wetland brief documents and health cards, registering site managers and managing wetland mitra database on the portal.

The training commenced with a Special Address by Mr Deepak Srivastava, IFS, APCCF and Member Secretary, TNSWA who spoke about the Wetlands Mission of Tamil Nadu and the need for conservation and wise use of wetlands. Dr R Ramesh, Director, NCSCM spoke about the need for such a portal and for maintaining the inventory and database of wetlands. He also informed that in the coming months, the portal management will be undertaken by NCSCM on behalf of MoEF&CC.

The technical session began with an overview of the portal, the MIS dashboards for SWA user and the various features. This was followed by group work where each group focused on uploading, editing and submitting one-two brief documents and health cards. A plenary demonstration of managing registrations of site managers and citizen users followed. The training ended with a discussion on the way forward and feedback on the user interface.

About the project

The Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project aims to strengthen the institutional framework and capacities for an ecosystem-based integrated management of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar sites) in India. Four Ramsar sites have been selected as pilot sites under the project: Pong Dam and Renuka Lake in Himachal Pradesh, Bhitarkanika Mangroves in Odisha, and the Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. The project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in close cooperation with the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA).
