Organic and natural farming in India plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable agriculture, preserving the environment, and ensuring the availability of healthier, chemical-free food choices for the population. This approach aligns with the country's long-term sustainability goals and contributes to the well-being of farmers and consumers alike.
With the same vision, Biofach, a leading trade fair, has been held annually since 1990, focusing on organic food and farming. This event serves as a global platform for professionals in the organic industry, including producers, retailers, and consumers, to come together, showcase their products, exchange ideas, and promote sustainable agriculture. Biofach India 2023 was organised by NürnbergMesse India and The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
As GIZ India, the "Enhancement of Smallholder Spice Farmer’s Capacities in Sustainable Farming" and the "Support to Agroecological Transformation Processes in India (SuATI)" Project participated in Biofach India 2023, held from 6-8 September. During the event, they showcased GIZ's various initiatives with a focus on the capacity-building of farmers for sustainable farming, spice production, agroecology, and food systems transformation. This also included the display of knowledge products from GIZ’s projects including Enhancing Rural Resilience through Appropriate Development Actions (ERADA), Sustainable Aquaculture for Food and Livelihood (SAFAL), and Securing Nutrition, Enhancing Resilience (SENU). "Digital Agro-Advisory Services and Management and Sustainability and Value-added Agriculture Supply Chain were also highlighted.
Ms. Ingeborg Bayer, Counselor for Food and Agriculture at the German Embassy in New Delhi, and Shri. Suresh Prabhu, the former Minister of Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation for the Government of India, visited the stall and expressed keen interest in GIZ's work on Sustainable Farming.
The exhibition played a key role in advancing the cause of sustainable management of natural resources and the promotion of agroecological transformation. It aligns closely with the Indo-German Biodiversity Programme, the Indo-German Lighthouse Initiative on Agroecology and Natural Resource Use, as well as the Green Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) established between India and Germany.
