Empowering Organic Agriculture: Farmers’ Exposure Visit to Sixteenth Edition BIOFACH India 2024

03 Aug, 2024

BIOFACH India, the premier trade fair for the Organic, Natural, and Millets industry in India, is organised by Nürnberg Messe India and the Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The event is designed to bring together key players in the organic sector onto a single platform, showcasing innovations and trends in organic agriculture.

Since its inception in 2009, BIOFACH India has been a cornerstone in promoting the burgeoning organic market, projected to reach $769 million by 2025 with a remarkable annual growth rate of 25%. This year’s edition provided a unique platform for farmers to connect with health-conscious consumers and leading retail chains focused on sustainable products.

The develoPPP project ‘Enhancement of Smallholder Spice Farmers’ Capacities in Sustainable Farming’ facilitated an exposure visit to the BIOFACH India Expo for farmers from August 3-5, 2024. This initiative aimed to broaden their understanding of organic practices, provide networking opportunities, and offer insights into market trends, certification processes, and sustainable practices. The farmers were carefully chosen based on demographic factors and their engagement in the organic farming sector. The group included seven turmeric farmers from Erode, Tamil Nadu, and six celery farmers from Kurukshetra, Haryana.

The BIOFACH India Expo 2024 showcased a diverse range of exhibitors presenting advanced products and technologies for organic, natural, and millets farming. The participating farmers had the opportunity to engage with experts, attend panel discussions, and explore cutting-edge techniques and innovations.

Amarjeet Singh, a celery farmer from Haryana, remarked, “The expo was engaging and informative. It provided us with valuable insights, including marketing strategies.” Similarly, Balushamani, a turmeric farmer from Tamil Nadu, stated, “It was a fantastic organic exhibition that offered many useful ideas.” Thiyagaraj, also a turmeric farmer from Tamil Nadu, added, “The experience deepened my understanding of the market potential for organic products.”

The visit had a profound impact on the participating farmers. They returned with renewed motivation and practical knowledge to enhance their organic farming practices and market strategies. The event reinforced their commitment to sustainable agriculture and provided them with tools and insights to advance their market strategy and drive their farming practices forward.

By showcasing products to a new-age, health-conscious consumer demographic and facilitating direct interactions with key market players, BIOFACH India continues to drive the future of organic agriculture, expanding market reach and promoting sustainable practices. BIOFACH India highlighted the growing significance of organic and sustainable farming in India. It emphasised the role of knowledge sharing in advancing the sector, promising a bright future for organic agriculture as it continues to evolve and address the needs of both farmers and consumers.
