The development of Good Practices of Benefit Sharing with communities is one of the three key objectives of the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Partnership Project. To contribute to this objective, a document on Good Practices of ABS was compiled by the project. The document looks at the entire ABS mechanism holistically and provides an orientation to the key actors involved in the ABS mechanism namely the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), State Biodiversity Boards (SBB), Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) and user groups on the development of Good Practices of ABS. It concentrates on these key actors and draws a correlation between the challenges they face and possible suggestions/approaches to address them.
This process involved developing a mutual understanding amongst the actors on common issues they faced and exploring possibilities of cooperation through which they could be addressed (by undertaking certain activities). These key activities or practices, which can be adopted by the actors, resulted in the documentation of potential Good Practices. In its formulation, this document also draws insights and learnings from various interactions that the project undertook with key actors through workshops, deliberations and meetings in collaboration with the Union for Ethical Biotrade (UEBT) and the ABS Initiative.
The document goes a step further in providing the key actors with a framework for evaluating, analysing and making informed decisions to help improve the efficacy of ABS while facilitating processes within the ABS mechanism in ultimately contributing in the sharing of benefits with communities for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Lastly, it also shares case studies that demonstrate the applicability of the developed framework and methodology in making the document more practical and robust.
The project organised a workshop on “Strategic communication for effective implementation of Access and Benefit sharing (ABS) mechanism” on 8th-9th July 2019 in Chennai. On this occasion, the document on Good Practices of Access and Benefit Sharing was launched by Dr T.Narendran (Technical Officer, IPR, NBA) , Dr Konrad Uebelhoer (Director, Indo-German Biodiversity Programme, GIZ) , Mr T.Rabikumar (Former Secretary, NBA) and Dr Biswajit Dhar (Professor, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University). Mr Shreyas Bhartiya (Author of the document and Technical Expert, ABS partnership Project, GIZ) provided a background on the development of the document and gave an overview on how it aids the key actors in the development of Good Practices of Access and Benefit Sharing.
