Adoption of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), especially in the form of blue-green infrastructure, can be understood as actions or interventions that incorporate natural or mimic natural green spaces and water elements into planning and design.
Along with UNICEF, an integrated team of experts from the Indo – German Biodiversity Programme, supported School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Bhopal to conduct a two-day workshop on Blue-Green Nature-Based Solutions on 8-9 April 2025. The workshop aimed to equip students and participants with tools and techniques to strengthen climate-resilient planning, focusing on wetlands, forest ecosystems, and participatory landscape planning.
GIZ conducted sessions on integrated planning and management of wetlands, forest fires and presenting examples of “homegrown” NbS from project sites. There were also sessions on disaster management planning, traditional water harvesting systems and participatory panning approach by experts from Bhopal.
Apart from interacting and engaging input sessions, a studio exercise was undertaken with the batch of Environmental Planning Students to contextualise these leanings for their focus district: Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. Prior to this workshop these students had conducted extensive field work in Rewa district and worked on developing climate resilient plan for six areas in both rural and urban areas. During the workshop, they worked towards streamlining these proposals, incorporating relevant NbS interventions. This proposal will be presented and discussed with the Rewa District Authorities and Deputy Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh in the coming days.
