Management Effectiveness Evaluation of Coastal and Marine Protected Areas: Side event at CMS COP 13

A side-event on 'Management Effectiveness Evaluation of Coastal and Marine Protected Areas in India' was hosted jointly by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, GIZ and Wildlife Institute of India at the India Pavilion during CMS COP 13 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat on February 20, 2020, with 65 participants.

Dr. K Sivakumar shared the draft framework for evaluating management effectiveness of Coastal and Marine Protected Areas in India. Dr. Neeraj Khera shared the Evaluator’s Guide that provide detailed check lists and guidance notes to facilitate evaluators as well as MPA managers.

Mr Soumitra Dasgupta, IGF (WL), MoEFCC, emphasised on the importance of this framework and guide for effective management of coastal and marine protected areas in India.

Inputs and suggestions to the framework were provided by coastal marine experts and practitioners.

The side event was moderated by Dr Bitapi Sinha from Wildlife Institute of India.
